CQB is a modern term used to define combat occurring in close quarters space, time and platforms, such as in any confined close quarter spaces: urban areas, rooms, hallways, blind-spots, low light, aircraft, bus, boats, cars, elevators, stairwells and so on. CQB operational environment, usually in narrow, restrictive and confusing, severely limits maneuverability and visibility to the point where conventional standard methods, equipment and tactics may not be suitable or viable. Based on the hypothesis and premise that CQB is an essential combat skill for modern urban engagement and close quarter’s confrontational environment, unconventional methods are crucial and very necessary not only for the Special Operations branches of Military, Law Enforcement but also for the ever demanding security industry and responsible citizens.

As was originally intended, CQB was implemented and designed for Special Operations units within the Military or Law Enforcement beforehand; however the diversity is such that CQB skill sets has evolved to great benefits for all branches of the services. No single CQB operational needs of a specialized team or operative is the same, however they do have common principles, characteristics and elements that are crucial to effectively operate, survive, and gain mission objectives in a dynamic operational environment and this is certainly true even for the civilians facing criminal threats in the common everyday situations.

The foundational aspects outlined in CQB XSYSTEM training sets the core structure for specialized progression and are designed to allow operatives to dominate any hostile environment with whatever weapon that is available. This program sets the core structure for other progression and is the main perquisite for all other CQB XSYSTEM based advancement levels. A complete Modern day CQB structure such as used in CQB GROUP International, consists of total tactical integration and application of 5 core skill requirements that must be emphasized in all levels, be it Military, Law enforcement, Security or Civilian sectors depending on the relative force options. These are;

1. Warrior Science
2. Individual Combative Skills (Human Weapon System)
3. Firearms Skills (Warrior Weapon System)
4. Team Operations/ Small Unit Tactics
5. Scenario Based Training (Force Adaptation)

What differentiates our CQB XSYSTEM from the rest? “Others use conventional training paradigm, we use unconventional training paradigm”. This has been our core belief and the reason for this is many. Worldwide today we are continually failing to negate the criminal and terrorist elements because of the unconventional means and methods they use, which we are not used to. So the important question everyone needs to ask if the criminals are using unconventional means and method, why are we still being trained in conventional training method. Doesn’t it make more sense to be unconventionally trained and prepared to face up to the threat nature we all face today? The answer to this is very obvious.

The Definition of “Conventional” - A convention is a set of agreed, stipulated or generally accepted standards, norms, social norms or criteria, often taking the form of a custom.

The Definition of “Unconventional” - Not conforming to common rules or conventional standards; out of the ordinary; to think and act differently.

In CQB Group the Unconventional elements are known as the- The X Factor. X-Factor in very general term defines the unknown factor or the unexplainable thing which adds a certain value to that skill, element or a person. The “X factor” has a way of pushing our warrior threshold through experiential training process. They can make one Confident, Challenged or Competent.

Our unconventional training methodology will more than likely question conventional mindset, operations and tactics that in actuality will force you to start using a whole different part of your operational mind to think in a different state of mind. The conventional thinking and training is easy: We don’t have to change anything and just follow what is taught. The unconventional thinking is different: We actively explore the most strategic, tactical and operational advantage in CQB environments, we know how it could be done, how it must be done and how it will be done in reality and how this affects us as warriors. The difference is simple.

Today it’s no longer relevant if you have trained in certain martial arts styles or certain shooting system or have military or law enforcement experiences but what is important is to understand that it’s very crucial that you have trained in some life saving CQB skill-sets regardless of the style or system and understood the Human Weapon System (understanding your mind, body, skill and will) within the individual and be able to use them when necessary.

Through our career as professional operatives and trainers to some of the most motivated law enforcement, military and security groups worldwide, we have been fortunate to have been exposed and experienced to different training thoughts and methods from different countries including firearms tactics, combat tactics, H2H combative, edged, impact & improvised weapons, counter-measures, team tactics etc. In this capacity we had the opportunity to dissect and analyze these training programs, specific doctrines, tactics and techniques and formulate our own core program that denotes the commonality of all these elements into a single training component. The combat objectives, tools and tactics may change but the core principles and concepts remains the same regardless of its usefulness to law enforcement, military, security or civilians. This process of stringing together the commonality within the most crucial combat principles and addition of the “Unconventional” training system is what has inspired the CQB XSYSTEM that we today teach as our base program to any responsible individuals.
